Dairy Council

Milk It Seminar 2024

The Dairy Council for Northern Ireland hosted a Sports Nutrition seminar on the 14th November.

We were delighted to be joined by Olympic champion, rower Hannah Scott. Hannah and her crewmates won GB’s first ever Olympic gold medal in the Women’s quadruple sculls at this year’s Games in Paris. We heard about Hannah’s journey from her home town of Coleraine and the Bann Rowing Club via Princeton University to the British Rowing Team and the Olympics in a fascinating and frank conversation with Professor Sharon Madigan.

Sharon, who is Science Lead and Head of Performance Nutrition at Sport Ireland Institute, also chaired the seminar.

We had more practical sports nutrition insights from the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics with Irene Riach, Head of Performance Nutrition at Sport Scotland Institute of Sport who shared her experiences of delivering nutrition support for Team GB.

For the latest sports and exercise nutrition research, Dr Rónán Doherty from Atlantic Technological University and Sport Ireland Institute looked at the relationship between nutrition and sleep, and the implications for athletes and sports people. There was also an update on the potential impact of REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports) on athlete health and performance from Professor Monica Klungland Torstveit. Monica is a Professor in Sports Science at the Faculty of Health and Sports Science at Adger University, Norway.
