The Dairy Council for Northern Ireland hosted a Sports Nutrition seminar on the 8th November.
Professor Gareth Wallis from the University of Birmingham discussed the application of lactose in sports nutrition and the potential role of dairy for delivering carbohydrates for exercise.
Dr Pamela Magee, Ulster University looked at nutrition knowledge and dietary intake of team sports athletes including those taking part in GAA and rugby.
There was more on rugby from Emma Gardner, Head of Nutrition at the IRFU, who gave us practical sports nutrition insights of fuelling the Ireland squad for the Rugby World Cup.
We were also delighted to be joined by international 1500m athlete and Portaferry native Ciara Mageean. Following a fantastic 2023 season, in which, amongst other things, she broke three Irish records and finished fourth in the World Athletics Championships, Ciara was back at our ‘Milk It’ seminar in conversation with Professor Sharon Madigan to tell us all about what's happened since she last took part in 2016. She discussed the role of milk and dairy foods in her own training regime, and as an important part of her diet growing up and playing sport.
Professor Madigan who is Science Lead and Head of Performance Nutrition at Sport Ireland Institute also chaired the seminar.
