Dairy Council

Effects of Whole Food, Fortified Foods and Supplements, EFAD 2024

The European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) hosted a webinar on 4 December, supported by the European Milk Forum (EMF), which includes the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland.

The webinar explored some of the differences in the nutritional and health effects of nutrients in whole foods and food matrices, compared with the effects of fortification and supplements, and the impact that this may have when developing Food Based Dietary Guidelines and moving towards a more plant-based diet.

Exploring Differences in the Nutritional and Health Effects of Whole Foods, Fortified Foods, and Supplements: Does the Food Matrix Matter?

Introduction to the Food Matrix - Prof Michelle McKinley, Queen’s University Belfast

Bioavailability of Micronutrients from Nutrient-Dense Whole Foods - Dr Alida Melse-Boonstra, Wageningen University and Research, The Netherlands

Roundtable discussion - led by Professor Pauline Douglas, Dietetic Coordinator at Ulster University and EFAD Honorary Treasurer, with EFAD Committee members Dr Antonis Vlassopoulos and Derya Dikmen.

The webinar can be watched on the EFAD Learning platform here.
