The Dairy Council for Northern Ireland hosted an online Sports Nutrition seminar on the 11th November.
This was the tenth ‘Milk It’ seminar in the series and the audience of sports dietitians, nutritionists, athletes, PE teachers and coaches heard from Professor Louise Burke, Chair in Sports Nutrition at Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research, Australian Catholic University about ‘The role of dairy in contemporary sports nutrition’.
Professor Burke, who has almost 40 years of experience in the education and counselling of elite athletes and has gained global recognition for her contribution to sports nutrition, encouraged athletes to ‘milk it’.
She pointed out that milk provides many of the ‘go to’ nutrients needed to help meet sports nutrition goals including high–quality protein, calcium, fluid and electrolytes, and is practical, palatable and versatile.
Professor Burke said,
“Dairy has a large role to play in helping to take proven sports nutrition ideas through into practical plans. There are lots of ways in which dairy foods can offer really practical, easy ways to help athletes achieve their sports nutrition goals. I definitely think we should be milking it”.
The seminar was be chaired by Dr Sharon Madigan, Head of Performance Nutrition, Sport Ireland Institute.
