Over 1,500 scientists and healthcare professionals gathered at the opening ceremony of the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO–IOF–ESCEO1), which was held in Paris on 4 April.
During the opening session, the latest breakthroughs in the field of bone and muscle health were presented. Part of the session was devoted to the theme of nutritional prevention of osteoporosis, and Professor Arne Astrup from the University of Copenhagen spoke about the innovative ‘food matrix’ concept using the example of dairy products.
Prof Astrup said:
“Food matrix effects, including interactions of nutrients and other components in the dairy matrix, may help to explain the different impact of dairy on bone health compared to calcium alone.”
In Northern Ireland, it’s estimated there are more than 82,000 people with spinal fractures as a result of osteoporosis. Half of women aged over 50 and a quarter of men here can expect to suffer an osteoporotic fracture.
